Abstract

Title:
The Hidden Link: Chronic Infections, the Tumor Microenvironment, and Integrative Oncology Interventions

Abstract:
Emerging evidence increasingly supports the role of chronic infections—including Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, Epstein-Barr virus, and persistent mycotoxins—in the pathogenesis and progression of various cancers. These infectious agents contribute to an altered tumor microenvironment (TME) characterized by chronic inflammation, hypoxia, immune suppression, and mitochondrial dysfunction—factors that promote tumor aggressiveness, immune evasion, and resistance to standard therapies.

This presentation explores the critical interface between infectious burden and cancer biology, with a specific focus on the metabolic and immunologic impact of Lyme disease and associated co-infections on tumor progression. A systems biology approach will be used to demonstrate how pathogens exploit the TME, disrupt apoptosis signaling, fuel angiogenesis, and drive the plasticity of cancer stem cells, thereby complicating treatment outcomes.

Additionally, I will highlight the application of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) not only as a tumor-targeting modality but as a tool for eradicating infection-induced biofilm structures and reprogramming the tumor niche. Mitochondria-targeted photosensitizers (e.g., Chlorin e6, Indocyanine Green, 5-ALA, Methylene Blue) in conjunction with specific light wavelengths generate localized reactive oxygen species, dismantling tumor cells and microbial communities alike.

Complementary intravenous therapies—including high-dose vitamin C, artesunate, ozone (UBI/MAH/10-pass), hydrochloric acid, and targeted biologicals such as exosomes and stem cells—will also be discussed for their ability to modulate redox status, stimulate immune surveillance, and restore cellular signaling disrupted by chronic infection.

By addressing the infectious terrain within the cancer ecosystem and reengineering the microenvironment through integrative metabolic therapies, clinicians may enhance outcomes for patients with complex chronic illness and cancer. This talk will present case studies, mechanisms of action, and clinical strategies for implementing a personalized integrative oncology program that considers infection as a root contributor to cancer.
